An example of an itinerary for a
4 day inner Delta Boating / Mokoro Safaris
(water levels
permitting)
Day
1
Depart from "The Old Bridge" Maun 10am on day one by motor-boat
first on the Thamalakane river then up the Boro river.
After the first 45 minutes passing through a rural setting we then cross the
"Buffalo
fence" and enter the Okavango Delta proper.
The next 4 hours is spent game and bird watching while navigating the reed
channels of the southern Okavango on our way
up to Chiefs island.
A light lunch of cold meats and salads will be served en-route.
We arrive at our camp at Nxaraga lagoon (19*33'42.21"S
23*12'23.32"E) at around 3pm, settle in and take a rest in the shade for
a couple of hours.
At around 5pm depart on foot with a guide for a short 1 hour game walk around
Nxaraga island to stretch you legs.
Arrive back before sunset which we enjoy with hippos from the boat on the
middle of Nxaraga lagoon.
Arrive back shortly before dark to a warmed bucket shower and a hearty
campfire cooked dinner.
Retire at your leasure to your tent to fall asleep to the sounds of the Okavango.
Day 2
Wake up call at 5:30am for those wanting to go on an early morning walk.
Coffee/tea and rusks will be served for those wanting something before the
walk.
6am depart on foot with a guide for a three hour game walk, other than plains
game there is a very real chance to spot the elusive leopard and bushbuck in
the forests on the fringes of Nxaraga island.
.Arrive back from your game walk to a full english breakfast
Depart from Nxaraga at around midday, stop for a quick splash at a shallow
sandbank to cool off.
Continue upstream for 2 hours gameviewing on the way. On this part of the
river there is a good chance to find elephants playing in the river to ease
the midday heat.
We will serve a light lunch en-route.
Arrive at Xaxaba campsite ( 19*31'55.07"S 23*04'36.99"E ) at around
3pm, settle in and relax for a couple of hours.
This campsite is one of the few places that Chiefs island actually borders on
the mainstream of the Boro river so the gamewalking possibilities are
endless.
At around 5 pm depart on foot for a one and a half hour game walk.
Arrive back shortly before dark to a warmed bucket shower and a hearty
campfire cooked dinner.
Retire at your leasure to your tent to fall asleep to the sounds of the Okavango and most probably lions on Chiefs island.
Day 3
Wake up call at 5:30am for those wanting to go on an early morning walk.
Coffee/tea and rusks will be served for those wanting something before the
walk.
6am depart on foot with a guide for a three hour game walk. Chiefs island
being the biggest landmass in the Okavango
delta offers the chance of seeing any or all of the game that this region has
to offer.
Arrive back from your game walk to a full english breakfast.
Depart at 10am with guides in a Mokoro (traditional canoe) for a 3 hour
cruise along side channels that are not navigable by motorboat.
Meet the motorboat upstream and say goodbye to your Mokoro poler/guides.
From there we go upstream to Jugu-jugu island for a light lunch. We will then
spend the rest of the day game and bird viewing from the boat. This is one of
the most spectacular settings that the Okavango
delta has to offer. The wide open plains of this area is home to a large
number of red lechwe (a semi aquatic antelope), lots of Crocodiles and birds.
Arrive back shortly before dark to a warmed bucket shower and a hearty
campfire cooked dinner.
Retire at your leisure to your tent.
Day 4
Wake up call at 5:30am for those wanting to go on an early morning walk.
Coffee/tea and rusks will be served for those wanting something before the
walk.
6am depart on foot with a guide for a two hour game walk.
Arrive back from your game walk to a full english breakfast.
Depart at 10am for a leisurely 7 hour boat trip back to Maun with a light
lunch served en-route.
For part of the return trip we will if possible use alternative channels.
Arrive back in Maun at around 5pm.
Guests who are not wanting to go on any of the game walks or on the Mokoro
trip are welcome to exclude themselves from such activities and remain in
camp with the camp staff.
Note all of our walks are conducted by guides who do not carry firearms.
